Tukutuku Panels - Poutama

POUTAMA

INTRODUCTION:
This particular panel tells the story of a climb to heaven by Tawhaki. Although we are told that he did this in order to obtain three baskets of knowledge from the Gods there is, as with all climbers, an easier explanation of his motives. (1)

Tukutuku panels - Roimata

ROIMATA TUKUTUKU PANELS

PRE - INTRODUCTION:

The next stage of my art course has officially begun (I passed the other one by the way) and already the papers and projects are flying thick and fast.
This course has a great deal more writing to it than the last one and so I thought that, in leiu of posting the usual stuff, I'd kill two birds with one stone and post one of the the finished reports here.

What it boils down to is that one of the projects this term is constructing a Tukutuku panel and this seems simple enough but one of the side projects was to research different panel designs and give a small presentation on what they mean and why you didn't choose them.

This gives me a chance to work on my report writing and, more importantly, allows the tutors to scare everyone with horror stories about people that submitted work without proper references, citations or sources.
For me the hardest thing is trying to write without making funny footnotes (The battle doesn't go well.  I might have to settle for making them serious and helpful)

For your convenience the words in bold are included in the small glossary found at the end.
Now read on..

Harts Change - Some scribbley bits

What's all this then?

It just so happens that a while back I posted some notes on amputation since I'd been researching it for Harts Change.  The main character, Evelyn Oneeye is minus a hand and her dog is down to three legs, the correct name for this condition is tripawd but that probably won't make it into the book.

For your perusal I offer a few drafts that I've been working on and, at this point in time, are outdated enough to be considered safe to post.

Background:

In order for some of this mess to make sense you might need some background so here goes.

  • Thanks to the first outbreak of real magic in many centuries the shape of humanity has been altered to a more Cervidae form.
  • Evelyn Oneeye escaped from Baron Trailin, had her life saved by Leonia and subsequently escaped again after it was revealed that she was wearing Leonia’s adoration which, if left unchecked, would have left her little more than a slave with no real will of her own.
  • Now she has managed to make her way to Lilytown, a small village with no survivors.
  • As always anything that looks like this are notes for things that need to done or, more usually, fixed.  I've left them in because I'm too lazy to take them out.
  • ...Now Read On

  1. Saving the Dog:
[In which Evelyn and Straggletaggle meet and love blooms.  Well not really, but there is a heart involved.]

A little ways up the track out of town she hears sound of dogs and comes to a fork in the road with a crude sign which was nothing more than a dog burnt into a tree.  She follows the path towards what used to be a mine.

The dog fighting pits are a long abandoned mine that have been refitted into a series of pits for fighting dogs.  As with everywhere else in the place there are a number of corpses and the main building has collapsed on itself due to a large crack in the earth.  The smaller buildings have undergone similar damage but they aren't important.  Already some of the dogs have gone wild although none are attacking her just yet.

The large dog thing, she had to call it a dog because tables didn't move and ponies didn't bark. “At least they never did before today” barked and with its hackles and hair up surely it wasn't as big as it appeared, chained to the middle is being harassed by a pair of lean fighting dogs who have managed to get free.

[nw: It looked like it had some wolf in it. Judging by its size it looked like it had some horse in it as well.
To judge by the colouring she would say that it had some wolf in it but to judge by the size she would say that it had some horse in it as well.

This works as filler but not at this point I think]

It is easy to see that the dog is a veteran of the ring and knows enough to properly conserve its strength But with patience the smaller dogs are wearing him down.  Evelyn drives these dogs off with some well-placed rocks and the pair slink off in search of easier prey.  The dog growls low as she approaches, straining at the end of the chain in an effort to get to her.

A bucket of almost solid ice and the corpses of several dogs told her everything.
The welljudge. ultimate fate of any animal, champion or not, who had outlived their usefulness.  The heavy chains tethered the dogs to each other and for one to reach the water the others had to die.
“Welljudge” she spat in disgust at the sight “Fucking barbarians” [They could have given you lot a clean death but that's far too easy”]

Again the dog lunged madly at her when she got close, pulled up short by the length of his chain and the weight of his dead partner.
“You don't want to do that” she pushed a bucket of ice water into his range with the spear.  The dog worried the spear a little but then fell onto the bucket of water with enthusiasm.  His stumpy half tail moving slowly from side to side and his eyes never leaving hers sent a mixed message.
“I'm going to set you free” she pulled at the heavy pin that held the chain fast to the post “because I know what it is to live in the chains of another.  But know that if you go for me then I'll kill you and let your friends finish you off”

The clap of the chain against the stone startled the dog into movement with only long habit pulling him up short before the chain could tighten against his throat.  Realizing that something was finally different it turned around on itself once and once again before running off with a distinctive limp and the length of chain trailing behind him.
“There's my good deed for the day” Evelyn mused and examined the spear where the dog had bitten but was distracted by an angry roar and the renewed sounds of fighting.

The pit bear was clearly on his last legs but sill the king although judging by the amount of scars that showed through the thin and mangy fur it was a kingship that had been hard in the earning and harder still in the keeping.

Its range was restricted by a heavy chain that bound it to the pits central post and the heavy shackle had rubbed at the bear’s leg until it was raw and festering.

The dog darted in and out, confusing his old opponent and using his greater speed as an advantage.  But a heavy blow from the bear slammed it into the wall where it lay motionless but still breathing.  The bear roared out in his victory and reached out for his challenger, pulling him in by the very chain that had once held him prisoner.

Without giving herself time to think Evelyn advanced and dashed in to bury the spear into the bear’s chest.  It wasn't ever going to be the cleverest of moves as the beast, maddened with rage and pain, took no notice of the wound [that, in a lesser creature, would have been mortal] that should have been mortal and his large claws drew blood as they raked at her hindquarters.

But even as it looked down at her the fighting dog, ignoring the blood that ran freely from its own wound arose and attacked again.  This time getting past the claws and savaging the thick fur.

Maddened as with rage and pain the monster took no notice of the wound that should have been mortal his claws drew blood as they raked at her hindquarters.  It turned to focus on her and that was a mistake because the dog, ignoring the blood that gushed freely from its own wound, rose from the ground and attacked again.  This time managing to get past the claws and terrible snapping jaws to sink its teeth into the bears thick neck, ignoring the spray of blood to savage it until both combatants collapsed onto the frozen ground.

With her spear next to useless she draws the chisel and makes certain that the bear is finally dead and although the dog growls when she approaches it does not have the strength for anything else.

“You're a brave one dog” she stroked his head and then reached for the knife “it's not right you should end like this”  the dog flinched as the blade touched a raw section of skin but something stopped her from pushing it any deeper and putting the beast out of his misery.
“I'll be cursed if I just let you die without even trying”

The strong ribs had already cracked but with her hands as slippery with blood and gore as they were pulling them apart was difficult, it was worth it to expose the heart and cut it free of the body.  With the bucket leaking blood and the dog slung across her back she turned back to the village.

[nw: Evelyn’s injuries need to be talked up.  They start hurting when she tries to move the dog back to the smiths house]

  1. The dogs surgery:
    [
Where the dog tries hard to go through deaths doggy door and Evelyn tries just as hard to stop him]

A series of frantic scrambles for even the most basic of equipment while the dog lay, far too still on top of the table. His lifeblood staining the spiral message that she had left just a short time before.

The last of the smiths clean clothing were quickly sacrificed for bandages and her night was a mixture of blood, sinew and endless stitchery.

“Those other curs wouldn't have survived a bear.  But you did because you're a champion and I didn't free you only to stand by and see them throw their life away.  So I'll make you a deal fighter dog.  I'll put you back together and you don't die on me alright?”

Her torrent of words and emotions eventually settled down into a simple mumbled litany but as she spoke her work was steadily progressing the burnt shell of the tavern was scoured and an unbroken clay bottle of powerful spirits was recovered from the hands of the dead who had no more need of it.

The rough spirits cleaned the wounds easily enough although the dog growled and thrashed around whenever it hit his exposed flesh and then whimpered in pained agony as she cauterized them with the iron poker or pulled out more of her hair so that she could sew him back together.

The most serious wounds were from the bears heavy mauling and how this hadn't finished him off she couldn't say but by the time she'd finished the stitches stretched across his large chest and gently curved around the neck before ending in the same small flower that her mother had used all those years ago.
[nw: the flower behind the ear is a plot point.  It identifies the dog as hers when she encounters Glino the Dogman outside Tardeel]

“Don't move!” she ordered as he twisted round to look at what she was doing “if you break these things my mother is going to come back from the dead and tell you off something horrible and, none of us want's that.  It was hard enough getting me to sew at the best of times.  Now let’s have a look at that leg of yours”

  1. The leg amputation:

[In which the title explains what happens better than I can.]
Calling it a leg was generous; The discoloured skin branched out towards the thigh while the old wound itself oozed oily green pus.
“Bastards just left you to die” mangy fur came away easily from the flea ravaged wound. “sorry about this my friend”  the sharp blade of the chisel sliced open the healthy flesh above the mess of the dogs leg and then she was forced to hold him down, get sprayed in the face with buckets of blood and avoid the powerful snapping jaws by the narrowest of margins.

“Calm down!  I am trying to help you!” he growled a few moments longer but lay back on the table, exhausted once more.  “that things going to have to come off. I can't save it and you'll be dead within a week if it doesn't”

Maybe the dog understood, maybe it was just drained of his strength but he lowered his large head to the table top and allowed her work to continue.

The heavy blade of the axe bit deeply into the table but was quickly forgotten while she held the beast down and was again drenched in his blood.  Again her job was stitching and cleaning with the one hand and holding the dog down with her stump.

As the winter sun surrendered the sky to the freshly born pair of moons the dog raised its head and licked at her cheek weakly.  She carefully untied the wide belt that had served as the tourniquet and rubbed uselessly at her own stained arms.  It was over at last, what was supposed to be on the inside was more or less back on the inside and that bad leg had been taken care of with an axe and rather nice piece of blanket stitch
that she was secretly proud of.

THE ANALYSIS OF THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA

THE ANALYSIS OF THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA.

INTRODUCTION:
Marriage has always been central to storytelling which isn't surprising since it's one of the biggest things that can happen to people.

But when your son insists that nobody is good enough for him what can a mother do?
Clearly the Grimm Brothers have pondered this very question and reached the same conclusion that I have.  But since they got there first and in German I'll let them take the credit (1)
THE STORY:

As many of these stories begin with the traditional 'Once upon a time' and as the staff of Jabberwockery are certainly not about to buck the trend our tale must therefore start with those immortal words.
Once, as they say, upon a time...
There was a prince who wanted to marry a princess.  Now you'd think that this would be simple enough not only was this the olden days but it's also a story which means that all he had to do is wait until his two older brothers didn't return from their travels. But here's the problem.  This prince is an only child which practically makes him unique amongst his royal brethren (2)
The problem was that no matter how far he travelled he couldn't find a genuine princess and he complained to his mother about this while they sat of front of the fire.
"I'm sure someone will turn up" his mother assured him "listen to that storm outside.  I hope nobody suddenly suffers a blowout"

At that moment there was a loud knocking at the castle door and the prince opened the door to reveal a very regal visitor

"Is it all right if I stay here for the night?  I ask because the road has washed out and my horse suddenly has a flat tyre"
"Um pardon?"
"I'm a princess just so you know" she said as she swept past him "it's just that I've had the worse day ever"
(3)
"Just a minute how do I know you're a real princess?" the prince demanded "do you have a seal of authenticity?"
"Left it at home"
"Family tree?"
"Several fine ones but the horse ate them"
"Family retainers?"
"No I had braces until I was 12"
"Loyal knights?"
"They're all out questing"

"Who's your friend dear?" The queen looked up as the pair entered royal room for receiving unexpected guests on a rainy night.
"She says she's a princess" the prince said doubtfully “but a genuine princess doesn’t let herself get wet.  They’ve got servants to get wet for them”
“Don’t you worry my son” There are ways and means of determining whether or not she is a princess" (4)
And so the queen unlocked the treasury and retrieved the Genuine Princess Spotter which looked amazingly like a pea because that is, in fact, what it was.
In the guest bedroom the queen placed the GPS underneath 20 mattresses’ and let the princess know that her rooms had been prepared.

In the morning the storm had passed and everything was shining with morning dew that had been dipped in extra strength Disney magic
(5).

With the entire cast seated around the breakfast table the queen began the royal breakfast conversation as was tradition.
"So, how did you sleep my dear?"
The princess drank her coffee, while this was technically a breach of royal etiquette it was politely overlooked by all present since coffee people are notoriously difficult to talk to before that first taste of morning goodness. “Oh it was terrible!  First I was sleeping on 20 mattresses for no apparent reason and then I just couldn't get comfortable.  I'm sure that I'm going to be black and blue all over"

At the sound of this the prince knew that he'd found a genuine princess because only a genuine princess could have felt the pea beneath all those mattresses.

The prince and princess were married and the pea was placed in the royal museum for all to see.
and this is a true tale.

QUESTIONS:

·         Why is the prince so damn picky?
Because if he wasn't then he'd already have a royal girlfriend when Princess, Really A turned up and that might be a little awkward.

·         Why does the queen use 20 mattresses?
It's such a weird number and also how thick are these things?  This castle was clearly designed by Escher.

·         Why a pea?
It just doesn't work without magic and I'll accept a magic pea when you can produce a witch who is also a militant vegan.
Personally I'd want my wife to be a little more robust than this 'princess' if only to stop each night being a recitation of the things that hurt her.
CONCLUSIONS:
You want to know why nobody in the world has this story as part of their official history?
Because any country where the main qualification for royal marriage is "the ability to feel a pea through a bunch of mattresses" will soon find themselves taken over by their next door kingdom where the qualification is the more traditional "I've got a great big sword" method.

The more I read this story the more obvious it is that the Princess and the Queen have gotten together and worked out this plan.  This is most likely under pressure from the other kings to stop the prince from travelling around and "testing whether or not their princesses are genuine"
NOTES:

1.       Because insane theories are easy but German is hard.

2.       That he personally didn't have but if he did he would have been.  Except he wouldn't have been

3.       She could start sobbing at this point, if she didn't want to set womanhood back 20 years that is.

4.       Fetch the royal duck!"

5.       It cost extra but nothings too good for my readers

Portfolio - 3D Work

[Note to self: go back and fix up the links etc but for now just get it up and running]

3D WORK:

Project: Kite.

The first group project.  Due to its size it was neither at home in the air or the sea.  It lived out its days hanging from a classroom pillar and catching the unsuspecting with a vengeful fin.

Project Mask:
For a long time the only decoration was the black around the eyes but through an odd mix of kabuki and Brazilian football I was inspired to add more and brighter colours.
This mask is typical of the kind worn in the Great Southern Empire of the novel Harts Blood.  Due to religious obligation every citizen wears a mask and appearing in public without one is the equivalent of wandering down the road without any pants on.

The rough and gaudy decoration tells us that this is worn by the lower class of imperial citizen.  After everything goes pear shaped at the imperial court this will be the society that the heroes are going to be interacting with most of all.
In direct contrast to this, the mask of the Empress is a masterpiece of gold, jewels and the finest silks.

Portfolio - Digital Section

Note to self: go back and edit links but for now just get everything loaded.

A concept comic that I abandoned long ago.  This would have been the front page of a manual which had been hurriedly photocopied by a machine that was one step away from the scrap heap.  An inky fingerprint left behind after the big robot heist, would have been the first real lead for the detective in charge of the case.

Designed to have the look of a summer book that had been picked up a few times but, due to bad writing and a terrible plot, was never worth finishing.
[note from me:  For some reason the red insisted on bleeding out when this poster was printed but since it added to the effect I didn't try and fix it]

A collection of title images that I’ve created for my blog. They generally stay until I get bitten by the mosquito of redesign, yet again.

At last. The end is here...[begin sad music]

INTRODUCTION:

Well the Certificate in Design course has come to an end at long last.
The final project, that of our portfolio has finally been completed, handed in and, even as you read this (1), is being marked.
Like everyone else on the course it is my fervant hope that someone is rushing my work over to Peter Jackson who will, naturally, take one look at it and exclaim "Why this is amazing!  Someone hire this man at once!  In fact hire the entire class!" (2)

As they say.  Hope springs eternal.

So whats happening with you now?
The marks I've been getting at this level are high and I plan to continue this with Creative Technologies which is the next level.  Since this starts fairly soon I'll have a short break from studying (3)
From what I've been told the biggest difference in the two courses is that the Creative Technologies has alot more theory as well as a larger projects to classroom time ratio.
We're also going to have to do another portfolio for this one but it's not going to be as big as the first one (4)

What's all this bit then?
I thought, since I haven't been posting much lately, I'd upload the great beast onto Jabberwockery (5)
Being, more or less a review of the art I've done there isn't alot of writing to it except for a line or two below each peace and there is only so much information you can get in before it starts getting crowded and you are forced to hack the three paragraphs about the study of blue to pieces and start all over again. (6)

Since it's scaled for A3 size I've had to shift things round quite a bit but you can get the general idea of it all.

Notes:
  1. If you've stumbled upon this post in Roboctober of 2015 then you can take it as read that they've finished marking everything and, like the rest of us, cower in fear of our Robot Overlords.
  2. "Because I'm Peter Jackson and I say so!"
  3. an official one that is. I'm still working on my anatomy (boom boom)
  4. Considering I got this information from one of the tutors I'll take it with a grain of salt. These guys are notorious for saying thing.
  5. Which, if you think about it is another great beast of mine. Perhaps they'll destroy Tokyo as they battle, perhaps not.
  6. Then you decide to leave the study of blue out and move onto the study of red whereupon the whole torture begins once again!

The problems with Battleship

THE PROBLEMS WITH BATTLESHIP!

INTRODUCTION:
If you haven’t heard of this game I’ll explain it in the next 41 words since it really is that simple.
You’ve got a grid, your opposite number has a grid. You position the various ships of your respective navies on the grids and attempt to guess the grid reference of your opponent’s ships. It continues until someone has no more ships.
I’m sorry did I say it was simple? My mistake. Let’s just take a moment to think about this.

QUESTIONS:
  • Who appointed you admiral?
  • As much as I dislike wild speculations or assumptions on this blog this one time I'll assume that you've no military record or indeed proof of any kind to show that you do have the authority to target enemy vessels, if indeed they are the enemy and you haven’t just kicked off World War III by firing upon a previously neutral or even friendly flotilla.
However, since the naval forces are obeying your orders regardless of any sighted proofs the most likely situation is that you have just initiated a military coup [1]. While this will undoubtedly lead to a stern talking to by the United Nations at some point in the future, at this time we will accept your explanation that “It had to be done!”
  • You, “The Admiral” are in the same room as your opponent, who is presumably an “Admiral” also. Why are you guessing the position of his ships?
  • Any military person would already know that war is won or lost on intelligence of the enemy’s movements and there you are with access to them. Clearly it’s time to disregard the anguished cries of “Don’t look you cheater!” and gain vital intelligence that could help to save the lives of the brave men and women who serve upon your ships.
  • To concentrate on those members of your own flotilla for a moment. Exactly why don’t they move their ships at all?
  • I concede that it’s a pretty difficult thing to do when your vessel has just been broadsided but when the opposing admirals shots are getting closer it is almost certainly time to move to another position or at the very least, send a coded message to HQ, which is you by the way, to let them know what’s going on.But against all logic your navy will simply sit there and soak up the damage until they sink. These ships cost a couple of million to produce and an Iowa Class battleship will hold around 1800 people. You owe it to them and to your country to see them safely through this conflict. At the very least your other ships can fish the survivors out of the water.
The largest vessels you have at your command are the aircraft carriers only they don’t seem to carry any aircraft. Surely it couldn’t hurt to send out some spotter planes in order to scout the area rather than simply firing randomly into the ocean and hoping that you hit something which will be confirmed by the enemy.
NOTIFYING THE ENEMY:
Speaking of which, you've managed to score a direct hit and you watch as the ship sinks faster than a Titanic sequel. The first thing you do is get on the radio and report "You've sunk my battleship"
    To the enemy.
Congratulations. You are now in direct violation of military law, no matter how you dress it up you’ve just managed to pass on vital information to the enemy.
It doesn’t matter if you have instigated a military coup and elected yourself El Grande Supreme Generalissimo for life you’ll still get a lot of flak for this. [2]
SOLUTIONS:

The main problems as I see it is that there are two naval forces who are equally matched in size and lack of intelligence. [3] Simply blasting away at each other reduces the battle down to one of luck rather than skill and thus it is clear that a nonlinear approach must be taking in order to achieve victory at sea.

  • Alternative solution A: Operation Tattler
  • While a propaganda campaign is a perfectly acceptable strategy it’s affects are going to be negligible in a battle situation unless it is extremely well orchestrated. Bribing the officers of the enemy flotilla has a chance of inciting mutiny on that particular vessel but this is a chancy affair at best and could easily backfire if there is a sudden surge of loyalty.
  • Alternative solution B: Operation Snakehead
  • As previously pointed out the Admiral of the opposing fleet is in the same room as you and while your spies may have failed [4] it remains perfectly acceptable for the leader of one side to fire upon the leader of another [5]But the ultimate goal of Operation Snakehead is to capture your enemy due to the fact that his naval officers will not willingly carry out your orders even if you have “totally won” [6]
However, if your enemy were to be captured, interrogated and finally brainwashed until he was little more than your puppet then the size of your navy will be double and your position as El Grande Supreme Generalissimo will be that much more secure.
NOTES:
  1. Which, considering that the ships used in Battleship! are taken from the American Navy is slightly worrying and only throws wieght to the milatary coup theory. One can only hope that your country has managed to acquire some old junkers which were otherwise rusting quietly in the shipyards of Westpoint.
  2. These are the sort of actions that guarantee you a spot in the top ten silliest El Grande Supreme Generalissimos for life lists.
  3. Military intelligence that is. Not the other kind.
  4. Going home in tears after being called cheaters.
  5. Certainly more acceptable than passing on military intelligence.
  6. As an aside I'd like to mention that the official definition of "Total Victory" is one where the enemy has been utterly wiped out. This would leave your naval forces considerably weaker than it could be

The Analysis of The three army surgeons

The Analysis of The Three Army-Surgeons
INTRODUCTION:
This is one that I've been wanting to do for some time now but, owing to the various pressures and responsibilities of life (1) I haven't been able to, until now that is.
What you're about to read is an interesting tale and one that, I suspect, was not meant for the impressionable ears of the children but rather whispered to their parents in the glow of the dying embers of the fireplace after the little ones had been sent to bed and the brothers were angling for a free nights lodging by keeping on with the stories. The version I'm working from was translated by Margaret, you'd like her if you met her, Taylor in 1884 (2)

It's much longer than the usual offering which is why I've taken the opportunity to break it up into four acts.

Rube Goldberg Machine Post 4: Studio session notes

MARBLE RACE DISCUSSION NOTES 10/05/12

INTRODUCTION:

Class notes for everything that we discussed regarding the marble race.
I've tidied it up and made it alot more legible than my notes which meant heaps of cutting and pasting into the various sections.  If I've missed anything or managed to get something horribly wrong then please let me know and I'll change it. [1]

MECHANICS:
  • Maybe just tilters.  no fancy tricks.
  • Simple things that are done well look good.  Complex things that are done half arsed look terrible.  This doesn't mean you you shouldn't try complex things but do it in the back room where people can't see it.
  • I liked the idea the other week about staggering it so that we don't all have to deal with pulleys. [2]
COLLABERATION:
  • "It's one of the most difficult things to do well and participate in.  even in Weta Workshop which has been doing this for 20 years there are still a dozen people who do all the work and the others leave at quitting time.  Those people that do the slog pull off the best work in the world"
  • The collaberation part has been missed by people.  It has happened but not as much as was anticipated by the beginning.
  • Everyone is working in teams of two.  Some are not doing as well so joining another group is an option.  This will take the compliment from 2 to 4 people. [3]
THOUGHTS:

TIME
  • Time being spent.  Many ideas but had to scrap them due to time.
  • just difficult finding time to work on it.
  • Organise a day everyone stays behind to work on it.  prefer to work on paintings first.
  • We've got 3 weeks left.  What we need to do is adapt and adjust the plans.
  • "Other classes haven't done this.  The mockups haven't proven anything.  Theres so much other shit that we've got to focus on it.
  • "We put it on you because you people are working above the BCT level.  June the 5th is the deadline.  After that 2 weeks are left to include this into the portfolio"
IMPORTANCE
  • It is dropping by the wayside in relation to other projects and assignments.
COMPLEXITY
  • The height of them is not a good idea and the project hasn't been thought through.  We are the art class, not the engineers.  There are so many different elements to this thing that it is complicating it.  If we use that corner, the danger of things falling, a simple track is boring.
  • Keep it against the wall so people can do it against the wall.
  • "I'd like to expand it, I think it can be done.  One thing that is important is the rigidity in ancor points which could eliminate all hangings.
Stay with the game plan and get them up and running.  Pick out certain ones that are ready to go and can be modified to work together, other ones could be set up on a table" - Eddie
  • "I just thought off the table idea instead of scaling the marble race down you could use that part of the room but keep it in the same shape which keeps the distance down but scales the project down.  This gives everyone the wall to work off instead of empty space"
  • Each group works on their designs and makes them work.  once they are in physical form the sections can be juggled together.
ISSUES
  • I think, for me I got an idea of what I'm doing for my part of it but as a whole I don't think there has been an even contribution to the project.
  • Work as usual but pull finger.
  • People need to cheer up about it.
CONCERNS:

SCALE
  • In all honesty it's not going to work.  The track needs to be smaller or individual pieces need to be bigger.  I think we might have to scale back to make it a viable option.
  • Concerns about how everythings going to connect with the individual projects.  People have done things at home but there are transportation issues.
  • Scaling it back would make more problems.
  • We have ideas but haven't tested.
OPTIONS TO MOVE IT FORWARDS:
  • Each team develops an individual marble race. [4]
  • Scrap the project completely and set a more achievable task which will get everyone more motivated in doing it. [5]
  • Scaling it back to a corner.  This is a risk that may or may not work since it would be tedious to redesign everything but many people are building in a smaller scale anyway.
  • If we scale it down there is no wall space for people who have used the walls in their plans.
  • Hanging things doesn't seem to be working - many of the hanging mockups have destroyed themselves after only a day.
  • Building across tables might be an option.  A table in the corner would allow us to block off a square of the classroom for the track.
TUTORSPEAK:
  • We may or may not spend time on the marblerace.

  • "I can't really comment on the project because it's noto clear it's just a matter of connecting them together.  I've worked in a collaberative envirionment.  This project is doomed and that's not coming from a learning perspective.

Collaberative projects will fall over unless things are led with an iron fist.  It can't be a democracy.  A democracy takes too long to make decisions.  I've worked in a collaberative environment with mutiple teams.  The spokespeople communicate with leader on a daily basis and they go away and talk to their teams but as soon as you take your foot of the gas there's no impetus to see the thing through.

From outside looking in it's too complicated with the mechanisms.  You need to know what your doing, Trial and error, the time frame is too short and it's not percieved as important"

  • "If we were leaning on you about this then you'd be working your asses off but it isn't percieved as important.  At no point have you all sat down and discused this and then gone to the tutors and told them so.  It doesn't matter if there's problems because you fix them but until the people that are in control of it know about it nothing will happen.

If I was you guys in your situation the first thing I'd do is bring them to the tutors and propose a seperate strategy"

  • "What we're doing here is a job autopsy.  Once the project was completed we'd deliver it.  What we made, how we made it etc.  the biggest lesson we've learnt is that we're having this discussion now and we're not having it two weeks ago"

  • "Dictatorship.  A good way to do collaberations the opposite is what we have with the class.  A leader is needed.  Everyone wants to have their own opinions and there's alot of people who are sitting in the back.  Not enough of a leader bringing them to the fore"

  • "The monday morning class is a studio class where you do a project the Thursday is a studio centered around all the subjects"

"The marble race is part of the Portfolio.  There is no way around it.  Why do it?  Because we live in a world where we have to work together.  I think that as a general class we've got the chops to pull it off"
NOTES:
  1. There were a lot of people agreeing with each other which is fine in a meeting but rather redundent in text form so I've condensed it down a bit - Just in case you were looking for your bit and couldn't find it
  2. Starting from the ceiling each group can have a drop of 200mm before passing it on to the next group)
  3. I believe that a few groups were talking about doing this after the meeting.  If anyone wants to merge groups then talk to the tutors
  4. If we did this we might need to merge several teams)
  5. Alas!  It's part of the portfolio so this doesn't appear to be a real option

Harts Change: Scribbly Bit - Meeting with Evelyns Father.

INTRODUCTION:

A bit of scribble from Harts Change that I'm working on.  It's an argument between Evelyn Oneeye and her father, Sor Esteele.  It's been five years since their last little talk and this one threatens to go much the same way.

At this stage its very heavy on the dialogue but that's because I write dialogue first and then fill in the scenery afterwards but what I want to set up is the introduction of Evelyns adopted daughter, Warchild who will be sent to live with Sor while the war continues.

NB: don't worry too much about the names of people.  They really are just placeholders until I can come up with something more fitting.

There is a touch of bad language which may or may not be left in.  I'm on the fence about it really since it fits that she'd use it to shock her father and also because she's been on the outskirts of the law for so long but at the same time I don't want to use it so much that it loses its power.

Anyway, enough of my rambling.  On with the story!
